Meze is perhaps the primary and most distinctive feature of Cypriot gastronomy. It consists of a wide variety of preparations: many types such as cured meats and cheeses, yogurt, olives, feta in olive oil, salad, and many other delicacies. All these are served with warm homemade bread or pita.
Meze also includes spanakopita, bulgur (similar to couscous, but made from wheat), etc. Meze is shared at a common table among family members or a group of friends and accurately reflects the gastronomic culture of Nicosia as well as the cultural heritage of its inhabitants.
The way locals share meze at a common table shows us how food brings people together, gathers them around a table, and helps them share their thoughts and experiences, bringing them closer and bonding them even more.
